Man charged to court over hijack bid on pregnant woman’s car in Derry

A 49-year-old man to face Derry courthouse on hijack bid on pregnant woman’s car in the city

DETECTIVES have charged a 49 year old male over a hijack bid on the car of a woman who was five months pregnant.

He is facing charges of attempted hi-jacking, attempted robbery, failing to provide a specimen when in charge unfit, in charge when unfit through drink or drugs and possession of class B controlled drug.

He is expected to appear before Derry Magistrates Court tomorrow morning, Friday 26 April.

The charges are in connection with an incident at Synge Court in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry during the early hours of this morning, Thursday, April 25.

At around 12.50am police received a report of a man entering the driver’s seat of a car whilst a female and two children were present.

He attempted to drive the car away but was unable to do so, he then proceeded to try and take the handbag from the women sitting in the passenger seat, however he fled the scene empty handed.

The pregnant woman and children were left unharmed.

The suspect was later arrested by police and taken to Strand Road police station.
