DETECTIVES in Derry investigating a number of security alerts in the City this morning have made an arrest.

A 39 year old man was detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He has been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station for questioning.

The security operation in the City is continuing.

A PSNI spokesperson said there will be “major disruption” as Iniscarn Road, Harty Court and Moss Park have been sealed off.

It is understood a suspect device has been left at the home of independent councillor Gary Donnelly.

Army Technical Officers have since carried out a controlled explosion on the suspect device.

A section of the Strand Road has also been closed to traffic as police examine a suspect car.

Police said that diversions are in place and that it can “only apologise for the inconvenience”.

However, it is understood police are not linking the security alerts to the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Creggan on Thursday night by dissident republicans.
