THE head of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin, has called for the public to pray for the family and friends of murdered journalist Lyra McKee.

The 29-year-old writer and author was shot dead in Derry’s Creggan estate last night, Thursday, April 18, by a lone dissident republican gunman.

Police say the terrorist fired up to ten shots from a handgun towards PSNI officers in armoured landrovers.

Ms McKee, who is originally from north Belfast, was standing beside one of the vehicles, when she struck by the bullets.

Police administered her first aid at the scene before rushing her by landrover to Altnagelvin Hospital where she tragically died from her injuries.

The death of a talented journalist and writer has sparked widespread revulsion and outrage across the city and beyond.

Derry-born Archbishp Martin tweeted this morning: “On Good Friday morning, 21 yrs after our historic peace accord, we wake up to shocking news of pointless, violent death on the streets of Derry.

“Please pray for her family, friends and colleagues today who must now carry such a heavy cross of grief and pain.

“Rest in peace.”
