‘Creative Clay’ classes at the Alley

GET creative with clay at the Alley Theatre this Spring as renowned clay artist Leona Devine will teach participants how to design and create their own ceramic planters.

Running for three weeks on Saturdays – 30th March, 6th April & 13th April – the classes will be suitable for all abilities and take place in a fun, friendly and relaxing environment.

The classes will be a great introduction to the wonderful world of clay.

You will have the opportunity to design your own plant pot / planter – and create it from clay using a number of hand building techniques.

You will also explore how to create pattern and textures on the clay surface.

The pots will then be ‘biscuit fired’ – with participants having the opportunity to colour and glaze their own pot /planter. All materials will be provided.

All finished pieces will be stoneware fired and suitable to display inside your home or outside in your garden – just in time for Spring!

Clay is also a very therapeutic material to work with and the classes are sure to be relaxing and enjoyable – and a fantastic way for people of all ages and abilities to get creative!

Leona Devine, who will be hosting the classes, is an honours graduate in Fine and Applied Art from the University of Ulster, where she specialised in Ceramics.

Whilst in further education at Limavady College in 2006, Leona received her first commission, when she was selected by Limavady Borough Council to design and produce ceramic trophies for the Danny Boy Festival Music Competition.

She has since undertaken several commissions, including sculpting a trophy for ‘Off the cuff’ / NWRC Media Award City of Culture 2013 and also a number of Mayoral gifts for Derry City & Strabane District Council which have been presented to various dignitaries from across the world.

Leona’s work is greatly inspired by the natural landscape and environment where she lives and works.

Based in the countryside, she draws inspiration from the rural landscape. Her studio is based on the family farm where she makes hand built sculptures of animals and owls using a coiling technique – which are then ‘biscuit fired’, coloured using underglaze, oxides and finished with transparent glazes.

The classes / ceramic workshop will take place on Saturday 30th March, 6th April and 13th April from 10 am – 12 noon.

The cost for three weeks is £40.

All materials will be provided.
