Councillor Brian Tierney views the pile of tyres dumped at Derry business park

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has condemned those who dumped a large amount of car tyres in a local business park.

He said it showed “no thought or regard” for Elagh Business Park or its workers.

Councillor Tierney was speaking after being contacted by a local person about the issue.

He said: “Those responsible care little for local people who trade in this well established business park or the local environmental impact.

“I have reported this to council and asked them to inform Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to ensure that the tyres are removed immediately.

“I’ve also asked that they speak to local business and check the area for any evidence to trace the person or people who left these tyres here.

“The cost of clean-up and disposal of these tyres will likely be met by Council.

“This will be ratepayers’ money going to tackle this scourge, diverting much needed funding from other areas.

“I would appeal to people to dispose of waste in a responsible way.

“I would also ask anyone who may have any information regarding this to bring it forward,” he added.
