The 21-year-old, former Hearts and Sligo Rovers forward, is the latest in a series of players bought by the previous regime not be offered a new contract for next season.

As the Lone Moor Road announced three new signings on Wednesday afternoon, Roy took to Twitter to thank the Candy Stripes and wish the club all the best for the future.

“Just wanted to say thanks to everyone at Derry City Football Club for the time I spent there! To all my teammates, the coaches, the staff and amazing fans who made me feel so welcome from my first game to my last,” Roy said.

“A special mention to Kenny Shiels who brought me here and gave me the opportunity to play at such an important time in my career.

“I loved my time at the club and can’t be more grateful for the things they helped me achieve.

“I will always remember my times here with happiness from times like playing and scoring in the Europa League something I always dreamed of as a boy along with other great memories.

“Just like to wish the club the best in the future.”
