SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the warning that cross-border bus services may not be able to continue running in the event of a no-deal Brexit shows the true extent of the disastrous impact of the Tory Brexit policy on the north.
Martina Anderson said: “The Chief Executive of Translink has told a House of Lords Committee in London that he does not know if his company will be able to continue running cross-border bus services in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
“At present, bus operators require a Community License to be able to operate on both sides of the border but this may not be valid post-Brexit.
“The loss of all-Ireland services would be disastrous for communities north and south as it would remove vital transport links between the major cities on the island.
“Students in particular would be hit hard as they depend on this service to get to and from their place of study.
“All of this shows the huge levels of uncertainty around Brexit because of the chaos within the Tory part and their approach to the negotiations.
“This demonstrates how badly communities both north and south will be hit by Brexit and underlines the need for the north to secure special status and remain in both the customs union and single market,” added the MEP.
