Sinn Féin reiterate opposition to Universal Credit

Sinn Fein councillor Eric McGinley

SINN Féin Councillor Eric McGinley has reiterated his party’s support for the implementation of Universal Credit to be halted.

Commenting after Derry City and Strabane District Council passed a motion urging the controversial benefit to be scrapped Councillor McGinley said:

“Sinn Féin have made our position very clear and support calls for the Universal Credit to be halted.

“The introduction of this new benefit has presented many challenges.

“The Tory driven policy and the online system which underpins it is riddled with faults, complications and delays.

“While the mitigation measures here have went some way to alleviating some of the worst aspects of Universal Credit, it remains clear that this system is not fit for purpose.

“It’s causing more hardship with many claimants waiting up to six and seven weeks without money which is scandalous.

“The very fact that Universal Credit also continues to roll out despite the IT system not being fully built is also shocking and we are again calling for it to be halted before more people are pushed into poverty,” he added.
