MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr John Boyle has praised the generosity of pupils from Oakgrove PS who have made a ‘big push’ in support of the ‘School Bikes Africa’ scheme.
Derry City and Strabane District Council teamed up with Rotary Ireland last month to call on people to donate unused bikes to their local recycling centres to help make life easier for schoolchildren in Africa and improve their chances of educational success.
Many African children live in remote communities, a long way from their nearest school. Without reliable, affordable, motorised transport the only way they can get to school is to walk. Having a bicycle therefore makes a world of difference for children, families and communities in Africa.
The scheme encouraged people to donate unused bikes to Pennyburn, Strathfoyle and Strahans Road Recycling Centres – which will now be refurbished and delivered directly to African schools.
Mayor Boyle said: “I am delighted with the fantastic response from the public to the ‘School Bikes Africa’ campaign – including pupils from Oakgrove PS who have made such a ‘big push’ and donated an amazing ’20’ bikes to the scheme!
“Every bike donated is testament to the generosity of people throughout the City and District – and will make a real difference to schoolchildren in Africa.
“Indeed, the donations of second-hand bikes will now enable children in Africa to get to school on time and arrive alert instead of exhausted, stay for extra lessons at the end of the school day and remain safe by travelling home from school in daylight.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank teachers, staff and the parents of the Oakgrove pupils for their wonderful support and very kind donations!”
