Access to EU institutions essential to address legacy of conflict – Anderson

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said continued access to the institutions of the EU post Brexit is essential to helping to address the legacy of the conflict.

Speaking from Strasbourg where she is hosting a delegation made up of relatives of victims of state violence and collusion, legal representatives and MLAs in the European Parliament, Martina Anderson said:

“I am hosting a delegation of relatives of victims of state violence and collusion in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to meet EU Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović.

“The delegation also includes Sinn Féin legacy spokespersons Linda Dillon and Emma Rogan.

“The EU has played a key role in helping to address the legacy of the conflict in the North and has provided a recourse for victims and survivors seeking to find out the truth about what happened to their loved ones.

“With the British government continuing to frustrate truth recovery, refusing to implement the agreed mechanisms on dealing with the legacy of the conflict and withholding funding for legacy inquests, the role of the EU is of vital importance.

“Brexit will deny victims and survivors that opportunity.

“It is essential therefore we retain access to the EU institutions, including the European Court of Justice and the office of the EU Commissioner for Human Rights.

“It is essential that we retain access to these institutions through securing special status for the north within the EU,” added Ms Anderson.
