MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, today welcomed a group of marathon runners to the city.

Said the Mayor: “I was delighted to meet Sri Chinmoy runners on visit to the city to promote message of ‘peace’ to local schoolchildren.

“Every year the ‘Peace Run’ visits schools in over 100 countries. Students get to meet runners, hold peace torch & express their own hopes dreams for the future!”

The running group is named after Sri Chinmoy,a spiritual Teacher, who was also a keen runner and saw running as part of his philosophy of ‘Self-Transcendence’.

He once said: “Running helps us considerably. Running is continuous motion. Because of our running, we feel that there is a goal — not only an outer goal but also an inner goal.”

Sri Chinmoy himself ran several marathons and a few ultra-marathons.

His best time for the marathon was 3:55:07 in Toledo Ohio in 1979.
