Public urged to protect homes and property against burglary

THE PCSP are urging householders to Close it, Lock it, Check it after a number of domestic burglaries over the weekend in Derry and Strabane.

Speaking after the incidents in which a number of homes were targeted, Chairperson of Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Alderman Mary Hamilton said that simple measures can be enough to deter thieves.

“We are fully supportive of any initiatives that raise public awareness of the need to keep homes, vehicles and property safe,” she stressed.

“The PCSP, PSNI and our community partners have been successful in disseminating practical advice and preventative measures to protect homes, vehicles and property from burglars.

“I would encourage residents to secure their homes, property and vehicles by closing and locking all doors, windows, gates and vehicles even if they are just nipping out for a few minutes,” Alderman Hamilton continued.

“From experience we know that the majority of home break-ins and vehicle thefts are opportunistic with criminals taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows.

“It is frustrating that many of these crimes are easily preventable and it is again worth reminding residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes and property secure from criminals.

“The PCSP will continue to support the PSNI and our community partners to tackle this issue through ongoing support for Neighbourhood Watch Schemes, provision of dedicated patrolling by Community Safety Wardens and the provision of support and advice on securing property.

“I would also ask that anyone with any information on these burglaries should contact police or Crimestoppers.”
