Donegal nurse Grainne Gallanagh has won the title of Miss Universe Ireland 2018.

The Buncrana native, who is based in London, won the crown at last night’s national final in Dublin.

Grainne (aged 23) focused her campaign on women’s health issues and female empowerment. She will now serve as a goodwill Ambassador of Ireland and compete in the international final of Miss Universe 2018 in Thailand this December.

As a former Miss Donegal 2016 and a Miss Earth NI runner-up, Grainne has a wealth of experience in pageants and will surely relish the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I am absolutely still in a state of shock!,” Grainne told her Instagram followers today.

“I cannot believe I am Miss Universe Ireland 2018. This has been the most incredible experience of my life and I am absolutely thrilled.

“I am so proud to be your Miss Universe Ireland and standing up for women’s health issues in this country. I will work extremely hard in the coming months in the lead up to Miss Universe – I’m going to Thailand.”

Grainne went into nursing after graduating with honours and a bachelor of science. She now lives and works in London, where she has progressed from emergency nursing to working in a women’s health clinic.

She has fundraised for the Donegal Women’s Centre this year and hopes to open her own health clinic one day that will establish new community standards for modern medicine and help.

There were many tears of joy last night as Grainne was presented with her emerald-jewelled crown by reigning Miss Universe Ireland Cailín Ní Toibín.
