SINN Féin’s Health Spokesperson Councillor Patricia Logue has praised the contribution of health and social care staff on the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

She commented: “Seventy years of universal healthcare free at the point of delivery, based on need, is a remarkable milestone.

“There have been many improvements and innovations in how care is delivered over the decades but one constant has been the central role of health and social care staff.

“All those involved in supporting and delivering these vital services have been, and will continue to be, the services greatest asset.

“It is important we reflect on, and appreciate, what has been achieved to date but we must also be cognisant of the challenges that lay ahead in continuing to provide the community with a high standard of health and social care.

“Transformation of health and social care is needed but it can only work by putting staff and patients at the centre, working in partnership with them in designing service delivery.

“For transformation to be successful it needs to be underpinned by additional investment and not undermined by austerity,” added Cllr Logue.
