Police warn of social media fake profile danger as ‘old men behind teen love story’

The PSNI have warned that not everyone is who they claim to be online

THE PSNI has warned the public to be wary of the many millions of fake profiles on social media in a hard-hitting ‘love story’.

Police posted the video ‘A Love Story’ on their Magherafelt Facebook page.

It shows teenagers meeting across a social media site and getting to know each other before arranging to meet.

When the pair eventually meet up at the local park they are both revealed to be older men pretending to be teenage boy and girl – much to their joint disappointment.

The video warns sharing photos and information with somebody who is not who they say they are leaves anyone open to the possibility of blackmail.

The PSNI warns that once explicit pictures are exchanged then control over their distribution is lost.

People can hide behind social media profiles for a number of reasons, in the past people have used them to find out intimate details and use this for blackmail.

The video says there are 150 million fake profiles live on social media and warns “not everyone is who you think they are”
