SINN Fein spokesperson for health Councillor Patricia Logue has said prevention and early intervention is a key element of tackling Type 2 diabetes.

Speaking after figures released by Diabetes UK showed an increase in prevalence of diabetes in the North of Ireland,  she said:

“There are approximately 90,000 people living with diabetes in the north of Ireland.

“While Type 1 diabetes is not preventable Type 2 diabetes in many cases can be prevented or delayed.

“Prevention and early-intervention approaches are important in tackling the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes and ultimately ensuring better health outcomes and quality of life for people.

“The Diabetes Strategic Framework and the Diabetes Network launched by Michelle O’Neill as health Minister in 2016 puts an emphasis on prevention of Type 2 diabetes, where possible.

“These strategies, along with public health initiatives, should be implemented in a way that supports people to stay healthy and well, particularly individuals and communities most at risk,” added Cllr Logue.
