EASTWOOD: THERE IS NO INCLUSIVE TALKS PROCESS

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA said there is no inclusive talks process and that the public deserve to know the truth.
The Foyle MLA was speaking after yesterday’s all-party round table talks hosted by the British and Irish Governments.
The Northern Ireland Office says it is hopeful of a breakthrough this week.
And there has been speculation at Stormont that Sinn Fein are looking to reach agreement as this is Gerry Adams’ last week as party president and want him to leave office “on a high”.
But others are sceptical of a breakthrough, saying DUP and Sinn Fein are still “poles apart” on issues such as an Irish Language Act.
He said: “We approached the talks in good faith and in the understanding that this would be a genuine dialogue between all parties to resolve the challenges facing us.

“That is not what transpired.

“The public deserve to know the truth – there is no all party inclusive process.

“While there was a meeting of the parties today, none of the substantive issues were discussed. We still do not know the detail of what is going on behind closed doors between the DUP and Sinn Féin.

“If this process is to mean anything, all parties must engage and be engaged on equal terms.

“The SDLP want to be constructive but we cannot negotiate if we do not know what has been agreed by the DUP and Sinn Féin.

“Again, I call on both Governments to show leadership and start playing their role in this process by bringing forward their own joint position to flush the truth out.

“There is little hope of an inclusive sustainable government, if we cannot even have inclusive negotiations.

“Schools, hospitals and our community are paying the price of continued political failure.

We cannot keep going around in the same circles. It’s time to end the cycle of failure.”
