Councillor Boyle’s call follows a decision by the Planning Committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council yesterday to approve a major planning application at the site of the former Arntz Belting Company on Pennyburn Pass.
The plans has the potential to create 300 jobs when completed.
But Mr Boyle says the road needs to be upgraded to cope with the extra to the area.
Councillor Boyle, who is a representative for the area said, “Following the decision of the Planning Committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council to approve a major planning application at the Arntz Belting Company site it is time for the Department for Infrastructure to make good on their promises.
“I feel that it is now imperative that DfI, who are responsible for roads, work alongside the developer of the Arntz site to ensure that the long awaited upgrade of the Buncrana Road is given priority status.
Councillor Boyle said, “The Council Planning Committee heard from the developers of the Arntz site that they are prepared to invest heavily in measures that will address traffic congestion issues in the Pennyburn area.
“That is to be welcomed.
“However, I believe that it is also the responsibility of the Department in charge of our roads to put their money where their mouth is.
“Local people and elected representatives have been listening to promises and commitments from DfI for years and nothing has materialised.
“This planning approval represents the perfect opportunity for DfI to invest and upgrade in parallel with the development of the site.”
