AUTOMATION has the potential to redefine the nature of work to benefit the wellbeing and livelihoods of workers, Sinn Fein’s Elisha McCallion has said.The Foyle MP was speaking following the publication of the 2017 Connect Knowledge Economy Report, which outlined the job creation and economic benefits of a growing knowledge economy in the north of Ireland.
The former Mayor of Derry said: “The rapid technological advances in our society in recent years mark the growth of a new economic era of automation.
“The 2017 Connect Knowledge Economy Report outlines the significant opportunities, and challenges, of a changing nature of work.
“A radically more productive and automated economy has the potential to generate new employment opportunities, while guaranteeing better conditions for workers.
“Maximising these new opportunities requires new skills. We must train and educate young people to realise the potential economic benefits of their generation. A strong knowledge economy is essential.”
