COOPER WELCOMES NEWS ON WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY PLAY AREA IN BROOKE PARK

Work on Brooke Park expected to be completed by March 2018

SINN Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper has welcomed the news that Derry City and Strabane District Council have confirmed that the new wheelchair friendly play area in Brooke Park will be open in thIs spring of next year.

A development which will help families whose children are affected by access issues to standard play equipment.

Said Cllr Cooper: “It is good news that the council have confirmed that the new wheelchair friendly play area in Brooke Park will be open in the spring of next year.

“This will allow the development to be completed. Unfortunately when the original consultations on Brooke Park took place the issue of a wheelchair friendly play area was not identified which meant it was not included in the designs or budget for the park.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in helping make this now happen and addressing this issue.

“It will obviously be a massive boost to the families of people with disabilities who can now avail of the facilities there,” he added.

Contractors Allplay Ireland Ltd completed the installation of the equipment earlier this month but the weather dependent installation of supporting infrastructure around the site cannot be completed until this March.

A user manual, risk assessment and supervision criteria for the equipment is also being developed by Council to ensure safe use of the play area when it opens to the public.
