CONDEMNATION OVER CREGGAN HOAX ALERT WHICH FORCED FAMILIES OUT OF THEIR HOMES

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has condemned those who caused a hoax alert in the Creggan area of Derry yesterday which he said forced families out into some of the coldest weather of the year.

Police and the Army bomb squad carried out tests on the item which was found at Balbane Pass on Saturday morning and later declared it as an “elaborate hoax”.

The object was later taken away for further examinations.

All roads in the area later reopened once the area was cleared and a number of residents who had left their homes were later allowed to return.

Mr Durkan said: ““Parents were forced to take their young children into the freezing snow by those with no consideration or care for this community,” he said.

“Those behind this alert have caused serious disruption at a busy time of year for these families and should be ashamed of their actions.”

Police have appealed for information on contact detectives on the 101 number.
