SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has condemned the arson attack on a car long belonging to party colleague and Derry councillor Brian Tierney in Derry last night.

Mr Eastwood said he condemned those who carried the attack in Galliagh out at around 10.30 pm in “the strongest possible terms”.

“Cllr [Brian] Tierney’s wife and young children were at home at the time and are understandably shaken by this incident,” he said,” said the Foyle MLA.

“Brian Tierney is an outstanding public representative who works tirelessly for everyone in our community.

“He will not be deterred from continuing the excellent work he is doing on the ground in Galliagh and the wider Ballyarnett area,” he said.

“SDLP representatives over the years have faced all sorts of intimidation and threat. It didn’t stop us working for our communities then and it won’t stop us now.

“I urge anyone with any information to get in touch with the PSNI directly.”

Anyone with information  is asked to ring police on the 101 number.

Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on freephone 0800 555 111/
