MCCALLION WARNS LIVES COULD BE AT RISK WITH FIRE SERVICE CUTS

SINN Féin’S Elisha McCallion has said lives could be put at risk in Derry by proposed cuts to the Fire and Rescue Service’s budget.

Last week, the Fire Brigade Union said changes to staffing levels at the city’s stations could result in call-out delays.

The cuts mean the only appliance in Derry used to tackle tall building fires no longer has a specialist crew, he added.

The Foyle MP said: “I met today with representatives of the Fire Brigades Union to discuss concerns over cuts to the Fire and Rescue Service budget.

“As a result of a shortfall in the budget, union representatives told us that these cuts are already being felt with the withdrawal of primary crews for aerial appliances at Northland Road and Crescent Link fire stations in Derry.

“The loss of this vital service could put the lives of the public and members of the Fire and Rescue Service at risk.

“Firefighters provide a vital, life-saving service day and night, often in very challenging circumstances to keep the entire community safe and they should have our full support in doing so.

“I will be seeking a meeting with the permanent secretary of the Department for Health and the Chief Fire Officer to discuss our serious concerns about these cuts,” added the former Mayor of Derry
