A MAN in his 30s is critically ill in hospital after he suffered serious head injuries following a vicious gang gang attack in Derry.
Police were called following reports of a fight between a number of men in Newmarket Street after 2 am on Sunday morning.
The injured man was first taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.
But so serious were his head injuries that he had to be transferred to the intensive care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Newmarket Street and all other roads in the area are now open following a forensic examination of the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road on the 101 number.
