COUNCIL FACILITATE PAID WORK PLACEMENTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Maoliosa McHugh

DERRY City and Strabane District Council are offering paid work placements for local young people aged 16-24, not currently in education or training, as part of the PEACE IV Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

A range of local employers will employ the participants for 30 weeks, paying them £7.50 per hour for 30 hours each week.

To be eligible, the young people must reside in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

In addition to the placement they must attend a number of free training sessions and events with other participants.

Welcoming the programme, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Maoilíosa McHugh said: “I am delighted that Council are able to offer our young people a helping hand onto the career ladder.

“This is a significant opportunity for those who are out of work to really get a sense of what career path they would like to take and gain valuable experience in their search for employment.

“I would urge local young people who are currently unemployed to attend the information sessions in our City and District in the coming weeks and learn more about what the opportunities available through the programme.”

The placements will start in October 2017 and run to early Spring 2018.

Young people who are interested are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions being held this month.

The first information session is on Monday September 18th, from 10am – 11.30am at the Guildhall, Derry and is followed by a second session later that day from 3pm – 5pm at the Derg Valley Leisure Centre in Castlederg.

The third and final session is on Monday September 25th from 10am – 11.30am at the Foyle Arena in Derry.

At the information sessions young people will have the opportunity to find out more about the programme and complete an application form.

The deadline for return of application forms is noon on 29th September 2017.

Local employers who would like to offer a placement to a young person should also contact Hollie Carroll on 02871308466.
