POLICE APPEAL OVER ARSON ATTACK ON MUGA PITCH

The gate to the MUGA pitch at Shantallow is now locked after mindless vandals put a burning tyre on the pitch, destroying the facility used by many in the area.

THE PSNI in Derry area appealing for information following an arson attack on the MUGA pitch at the weekend in Shantallow.

Mindless thugs set fire to a tyre on the pitch, causing extensive damage, ruining the recreation facility used by sports teams and the local community.

It will now cost thousands of pounds to completely replace.

PSNI Foyle say on its Facebook page:

“In the early hours of the 2nd September the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) pitch was damaged by fire 🔥by youths. Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Team 👮🏻 patrol this area and we see the pitches CONSTANTLY in use!

“The kids that use this are your children, your grandchildren and your friends.

“It keeps them busy, active and away from Anti-Social Behaviour.

“We 👮🏻encourage and support this. Sadly these youths have ruined it for all of them.

“We have done Door to Door🚪and are reviewing CCTV 🎥

“If you know anything about this crime please get in touch via 101 (reference: 915 of 02/09/17).”
