DERRY ROAD CLOSED AFTER SUSPICIOUS ITEM FOUND DURING SEARCH

POLICE say Southway in Derry is currently closed due to a security alert.

Chief Inspector Paul McCracken said: “Detectives from PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch investigating dissident republican activity conducted a search in the Southway area of Derry this morning, Wednesday, 16th August.

“A suspicious item has been discovered and ATO have been tasked to examine the item.

“Southway is currently closed to facilitate this examination, and is likely to be closed for the next few hours.

“I would like to ask for your patience and assure you that we will be making efforts to have the road reopened as soon as possible.”
