Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan

SINN Féin MLA Karen Mullan today urged support for the BDS campaign and the boycott of Israeli goods.

The call came after attending a meeting alongside Elisha McCallion MP and Martina Anderson MEP with the co-founder of the Palestinian ‘Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions’ campaign, Omar Barghouti during a visit to Derry, hosted by the Trade Union Friends of Palestine.

Following the meeting, Foyle MLA Karen Mullan said: “We held a very positive and constructive meeting with BDS co-founder, Omar Barghouti as part of his engagements with a number of groups and Trade Unions across the North.

“We highlighted Sinn Féin’s continued support for the BDS campaign until a just and lasting peace is achieved and a Palestinian state is established.

“Sinn Féin totally supports the right for non-violent, grassroots, civil society campaigns for justice to exist.

“This cultural, academic and economic boycott of Israel is the most effective peaceful way of securing change, as happened with the South African Apartheid regime.

“In October 2016, Sinn Féin colleagues proposed and successfully passed a BDS motion on Derry City & Strabane District Council, achieving an Apartheid free zone.

“We must now ensure this motion is implemented in the most practical way possible.”
