Edmund Rice who died following an alleged assault in Co Waterford

THE funeral will take place today (Tuesday) for a Derry man who died after he was allegedly assaulted in Co Waterford.

Edmund Rice was found unconscious on a street in Tramore on Saturday morning.

The 54-year-old was rushed to hospital but tragically died the following day.

The married father of four was originally from Derry city.

He had been living in the Ferrybank area of Co Waterford for a number of years.

Gardai said the body of Mr Rice was found following an incident on Lower Strand Street during the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 21-year-old man was later arrested.

He faced Waterford District Court on Sunday.

Niall Hewson, of the Charinwood estate in Tramore, was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Rice.

The defendant offered no reply when the charge was put to him, the court heard.

Hewson was released on bail and is due back in court on July 25.

Requiem Mass for Mr Rice will be held at 12 noon today at Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank, Co Waterford.

He will be buried in the adjoining St Killinn’s Cemetery.
