WORK has begun on a state of the art new play park within Ballyarnett Country Park after Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, visited the site this week to view how the project is developing.

The play area will contain three different zones with large scale timber play equipment for toddlers, children and older children all enclosed within a 2.4m high mesh fence.

The scheme is jointly funded from the Social Investment Fund (SIF) which is part of the Executive’s Delivering Social Change Framework, and the Council through its Play Development Programme to the value of £600k.

Hawthorn Heights Ltd from Greysteel have been appointed as principal contractor for the project which the Mayor said will be a significant addition to the offering at the Country Park.

“This will be a particularly welcome addition for the Ballyarnett area where there aren’t many existing areas for children to play,” noted Alderman McClintock.

“It is one of a number of major projects earmarked for the extensive park and makes it an even more attractive area for the public to visit and enjoy the outdoors.

“Council are committed to providing quality play provision for children across the City and District through the Invest in Play Programme which can play a key role in promoting social interaction and physical activity among our young people.”

Darren Kirby, Strategy Manager for Outer North Neighbourhood Partnership, noted that the play park can play a key role in encouraging children to remain healthy and active.

“Ballyarnett Country Park is a major public asset within our city but it is often overlooked by residents and visitors alike,” he said.

“This investment will enhance the infrastructure and offering within the Park and contribute to regeneration efforts across the area.

“We’re keen to promote the importance of ‘play’ for children and young people and we’re confident that this play park will act as focal point for the Park – a place for children to play and forge new friendships, while ensuring they remain healthy and active.”

Noel McCartney, Chair of the local SIF Steering Group, added: “I wish to congratulate the community and statutory partners for bringing the project to this key stage and thank the Executive Office and Council for their contributions.

“The Play Park will not only add to the offering of Ballyarnett Country Park but will enhance the quality of life of the residents of the Ballyarnett and Greater Shantallow areas by offering a safe and convenient place for children to play together.

“As Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness was particularly supportive in helping bring this and other SIF projects to fuition because he knew the positive impact it could have on the lives of local families.

“I would like to personally acknowledge the support and guidance he gave our local steering group as work begins.”
