THE award winning Art and Design Department at North West Regional College has become the first in Ireland to receive course accreditation by the prestigious University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body.

Students who enrol on the college’s Level 3 and Foundation Diploma courses in Strand Road Derryy and Limavady from this September will now have the opportunity to receive an official UAL awarding body qualification.

UAL Awarding Body is part of University of the Arts London – Europe’s largest specialist art and design university.

UAL Awarding Body specialises in creative qualifications and is the leading provider of the Diploma in Art & Design – Foundation Studies.

It works with further education colleges, universities and sixth forms colleges and has a rigorous approval process to ensure that its qualifications are delivered to a high standard.

Sheila O’Brien, Curriculum Manager for Art and Design at NWRC, said news of the award would be a boost to both current and prospective students.

She added: “This award is a reflection of the high standard that NWRC Art and Design has become associated with. Students will receive a certificate on completion of their course recognising their validation from a prestigious awarding organisation.

“For NWRC to be associated with the UAL brand is a huge accolade. Staff from UAL Awarding Body were incredibly impressed with the work they saw here at the college.”

The Art department at North West Regional College has a proud and established tradition for progressing students on to employment and further study.

Course options include skills development in drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, 3D design, interior design, fashion and textiles, graphics, animation and illustration.

The College also offers the Foundation Diploma on a part time basis. The course runs on a Monday for 7 hours over two years. More information is available from Sheila O’Brien on [email protected]

The news comes as details for the annual North West Regional College exhibition of Art, Design and Multi-Media show are announced.

The show opens on Wednesday June 7 in Limavady Campus at 7 p.m. and runs daily until Wednesday June 14, and in the Lawrence Building, Derry~Londonderry on Thursday June 8 until Thursday, June 15.
