THE Welsh football team paid tribute to Derry City captain Ryan McBride by presenting a special number five jersey to Irish President Michael D Higgins last night.

Wales skipper Ashley Williams handed over the shirt before his side’s World Cup qualifier with the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Candystripes defender McBride was found dead at home last Sunday night, aged 27.

Tributes have been pouring in for the popular player throughout the week, and on Friday night the Welsh national team joined in paying their respects.

Fans at the Aviva also held a minute’s applause in the fifth minute of the game, commemorating the number five jersey McBride wore for Derry.

James McClean – a close friend of McBride – paid his own tribute by wearing the number five shirt for the Republic during the game.

Northern Ireland fans will hold a minute’s applause before their game against Norway on Sunday night at the National Stadium in Belfast.
