Missing John Concannon has not been seen since November 2015

A POST mortem examination and identification procedures are due to take place today on human remains found on Saturday close to the Derry/Donegal border.

The remains, which were found on the Lenamore Road, are believed to be that of missing Derry pensioner John Concannon.

Police recovered the remains yesterday and they have now been taken by private ambulance to a mortuary in Belfast where a pathologist will carry out a post mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

An identification process involving dental and DNA testing will also take place to establish the victim’s identity.

However, initial thoughts are that the remains are that of Mr Concannon.

The human remains were found on Saturday morning by a man clearing land with machinery.

The body was found in thick undergrowth.

John Concannon went missing from his home in Derry in November 2015.

The body was found along the border in the townland of Lenamore on the outskirts of Muff.

The investigation is being overseen by the PSNI.

The late Mr Concannon’s relatives gathered at the scene of the discovery on Saturday.

The 71 year old, who was suffering from dementia at the time, was last seen amidst reports that he may have taken a bus to Derry.

A huge foot search for the missing pensioner which included sniffer dogs lasted for weeks on both sides of the border but he was never found.
