MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council has made a special presentation to a local design student for a unique piece of textile work which has been put on display at the Tower Museum.

NWRC HND Textiles 2nd year student Daniel Graham has designed a special curtain for the museum’s Education Space inspired by the architecture of the building, which was unveiled to the public this week.

Presenting the gift the Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Alderman Hilary McClintock, praised the student’s unique take on the building.

“Daniel’s design, utilising the powerful imagery of the Tower itself, really captures the essence of the building,” she said.

“The work is a fantastic addition to the museum and makes the new education space even more welcoming.”

The textile work uses the latest techniques to achieve a multi-faceted representation of the museum, as Daniel explained.

“I wanted to capture the architecture of the tower museum and its surroundings in multiple states.

“I achieved this by taking numerous photographs from the same position at many times of each passing day across the course of three months.

“I was able to capture the scene in the sunlight, during a rainstorm and in the evening time, taking over two hundred photographs in total.

“Then I printed every photograph on cartridge paper and made individual tears and collaged the photographs together.

“After the composition was complete I scanned it into a computer and added embellishments to the piece for example airbrushing the edges and enhancing some of the lighter and darker tones for more definition.

“When I was satisfied with the arrangement I took the process into digital printing where I had to dictate the scale and prepare the fabric for the designated space.”

Education Officer with the Tower Museum, Ronan McConnell said: “The curtain is wonderfully designed and adds a playful dimension to our Education Space.

“We are planning a whole range of events in the Education Space this year, so we would encourage visitors, families and students to keep an eye on our Facebook page and look out for our new events programme which will be launching next month.”
