MEMBERS of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee approved full planning permission for the change of use of the former lounge bar known as “The Beechtree” to six, one-bedroomed apartments with on-site parking at 106 Beechwood Avenue, Derry.

The application came before members who attended this month’s Planning Committee meeting that was held at the Guildhall in Derry.

The application is for the change of use and renovation of the existing two-storey disused public house that sits within a pocket of commercial development along Beechwood Avenue.

The application will involve the subdivision of the building to provide six, one-bedroomed apartments, with eight parking spaces located to the rear of the building.

Members of the Planning Committee were informed at the meeting that there were no representations received in relation to the application and that all consultations with relevant bodies has taken place and been approved with conditions.

Welcoming the planning decision, the Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Cllr John Boyle said he was delighted that the disused building would be transformed into much needed accommodation provision in the Creggan area of the city.

“I am delighted the Council has approved this application that will enhance the local area and provide housing units for future residents to create a living space that is close to local amenities and services.”

The Chief Executive of Derry City and Strabane District Council, John Kelpie said the development will bring a substantial boost to the local economy as well as see investment and refurbishment works to improve a building that has been disused for some time.
