ONE of the most important periods in Derry’s industrial history will come under the microscope this Friday, November 25, when the Tower Museum hosts the latest in a series of coffee mornings.
The shirt factory era had a pivotal impact in shaping the economic and social fabric of the city over the last two centuries and the Museum are encouraging interested members of the public and as many former shirt factory workers as possible to come along and share their memories and experiences.
Acting Education Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Ronan McConnell, encouraged the public to avail of the opportunity to learn more about the period.
“The establishment, growth and ultimate decline of the shirt factories from the 1830s through the 19th and 20th centuries, played an enormous role in the economic, industrial and social history of this city,” he said.
“Derry City and Strabane District Council Museums Service holds a vast collection of objects, documents and memorabilia which help to tell the story of the generations of women, men and children who worked in the factories.
“We would especially like to extend an invitation to former factory workers to share their stories and experiences or just sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy the bars.”
The Tower Museum’s coffee mornings are designed to encourage healthy reminiscence and discussion using the museum collections as a base for conversation.
They have proven popular with the public as a way to discover the museum’s archives in a relaxed and sociable environment.
Friday’s event at the Museum will run from 10am to 11.30am and admission is free.
