The 25 year old victim required treatment at Altnagelvin Hospital for a head injury but has since been discharged.

The two men are believed to have made off in a dark coloured car and drove in the direction of the Skeoge roundabout.

Detectives investigating this incident later carried out a search at premises in Ardnamoyle Park in the Shantallow area.

They seized a car for further examination.

In a follow up operation, two men, aged 26 and 23, were arrested in the Carnhill area shortly before 11.00 am.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said: “Both men have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of an offensive weapon and currently remain in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

“While we have the two arrests, I would still appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 140 of 14/11/16.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
