SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the European Union should do more to protect the rights of human rights activists campaigning for Palestine.

Ms Anderson said: “In recent weeks and months there has been an apparent rise in attacks against human rights activists and campaigners for the people of Palestine, particularly those involved in the BDS movement.

“I asked Fedrica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, whether the EU will commit to protecting the rights of these campaigners and I welcome her response that it will.

“She confirmed that in line with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the rights of those involved with the BDS movement will be protected.

“The EU now needs to make sure it lives up to this commitment, not only by supporting the people of Palestine and their advocates across Europe, but also by challenging Israel to comply with international human rights legislation,” added Ms Anderson
