KENNY Shiels has told his Derry City players to go all out against Sligo Rovers to ensure that third place is secured this season.

A third place will be a just reward for the team’s hard work all season.

And as a reward for lifting the club out of the doldrums the Derry City board have given Shiels a year extension to his contract.

The Candy Stripes need just two points from their last two games of the season against Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic to achieve a top three finish, but the City boss does not want to wait until next week.

Shiels wants the required points on board as soon as possible, against Sligo, in front of the Derry City supporters.

“I want to get third place and I want to highlight that to the supporters because we need to win and we’re putting all of our eggs into that basket,” he explained.

“We’ll be going as strong as we possibly can and let’s hope that we can achieve what we want to. The boys have done really well.”

Sligo Rovers will present a significant challenge to the Candy Stripes this season and having already picked up three points at the Brandywell earlier in the campaign, Shiels knows it will not be easy.

“We just want to get this one over the line if we can but it’s going to be a really tough game,” he continued.

“It would be nice to travel to St. Pat’s with the luxury of having qualified for third place, which would be a good position in the table for the club and the supporters.

“That’s the most we can possibly achieve, so we can’t be happier than that at the moment,” he told the club’s webpage derrycityfc.net
