POLICE WARNING OVER THE DANGERS OF FIREWORKS IN THE WRONG HANDS

This lad lost the tip of his fingerprint after a firework went off in his hand

THIS is what happens when illegal fireworks go into the wrong hands and end up with a life changing injury.

It is a fun time of year for children who dress up in costume and go trick-or-treating for sweets and money

But is also the time of year that fireworks become an issue and police are warning of the dangers of them in the wrong hands.

A spokesman said: “You may think they’re fun. You may think you won’t get hurt. You may think they’re perfectly safe and just a bit of craic.

“That’s what the lad attached to this picture thought too. This isn’t clever effects, it’s not fancy make up, it’s a missing finger tip.

“This incident was over in England, but the risks are the same and he wanted awareness raised.

“Fireworks are explosives. They are unpredictable, and highly dangerous.

“They should be left to the professionals working at organised displays.

“The sort being sold out of the back rooms of shops and out of the boot of cars are even worse.

“They’re cheap, not quality assured, highly unpredictable, and can lead to injuries like this, or worse.

“Now imagine that firework goes off in your face rather than your hand. If you’ve been out throwing fireworks, whether it be at cars, houses, or people- wind your neck in.

“You could go from banter to murder in seconds.

“Injuring or killing someone by your own stupidity is something you’ll have to live with, and something you’ll definitely answer for.

“If you know who’s selling fireworks illegally in your area, let us know. Call our Neighbourhood teams on the 101 number.

“You don’t even need to leave your details if you don’t want to.

“All we need to know is WHO is selling them, WHERE they’re selling them, and HOW they’re selling them.

“One call could save lives.”
