A BRAVE police officer who defied the odds to beat ‘locked-in syndrome’ after suffering a stroke was warmly welcomed back to her desk today.
In April 2015, the Clodagh Dunlop suffered a massive stroke which brought on the condition of ‘locked-in’ syndrome.
For three months the 35-year-old was unable to speak or move.
Clodagh, who is from Magherafelt, could only communicate by blinking even though her mind remained completely alert.
There is no treatment for ‘locked-in’ syndrome and recovery is very rare.
Which is why her recovery was been all the more remarkable.
Today was another milestone in her recovery when she returned to work – and joins a PSNI team tackling drug issues in Derry.
The PSNI in Foyle said: “Today is a pretty momentous day as we welcome Clodagh Dunlop back to work after an 18 month absence.
“Many of you have been following Clodagh’s progress since suffering a stroke which resulted in ‘locked-in’ syndrome.
“Clodagh has been a true inspiration as she has defied the odds.
“She may also be the world’s first sufferer from ‘locked-in’ syndrome to return to work within 18 months.
“Throughout this incredibly challenging time Clodagh has kept her infectious smile, which has now become her trademark.
“Clodagh will now be playing a meaningful role Keeping People Safe in Derry & Strabane, with a particular focus on drugs.
“We would like to thank all those who have offered words of support and encouragement to Clodagh or helped in her recovery.
“We know there are still challenges ahead but we also know that Clodagh has demonstrated the motivation, tenacity and courage to take them all on.
“Welcome back Clodagh!”
In an interview with the BBC in December last year, she described what happened to as the “most terrifying experience of my life”.
“I remember everything from the first moment I woke in the intensive care unit,” she told BBC Radio Foyle reporter Elaine McGee.
“It was a very surreal experience. I wanted to shout out to everyone ‘I’m here!’
“I could see my family and partner, Adrian, were so upset and I wanted to reassure them but I couldn’t do anything.
“You are a prisoner in your own body,” added Clodagh.
