AS part of Local Democracy Week, young people from the city and district will be asked to discuss and debate what they care about and consider why they should register to vote at a special debate in the Guildhall next week.
Although young people can apply to register to vote when they are over 16, only around half do so and while many are passionate about issues that affect them they still do not get involved in local democracy.
‘Rock Enrol’, or the young peoples ‘Question Time’ will give those aged 16 to 18 years an opportunity to be involved, meet with local Councillors and discuss the issues that are important to them.
The event will also bring to life why young people should register to vote.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock said,
‘The Council Chamber voting and sound system is perfect for this style of debate. It will give those taking part a real feel for local government and its workings.
‘Encouraging democratic engagement and increasing the numbers of young people on the electoral register is really important which is one of the primary reason Local Democracy Week was formed.
‘For anyone interested in taking part, they should ensure they register as soon as possible for this event.
Anyone attending should have any questions they may have prepared in advance and submitted to a Member Services Officer at Council on arrival at the event’.
‘Rock Enrol’ will take place on Wednesday 12th October 2016 from 10.00 am until 12.00 pm (lunch will be provided) at the Council Chamber in the Guildhall.
There will be two sessions inthe event;Session 1: Vote with your feet which getsyoung people to express their opinions on what matters to them; Session 2:Critical issues and hot potatoes – groups will be asked to discuss and debate hot topics. Patricia Murphy, the Deputy Returning Officer with the Electoral Office will also be giving a presentation.
