BROKENSHIRE NEEDS TO WAKE UP TO REALITY ON BREXIT – MCCARTNEY

Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney.

SINN Fein’s Raymond McCartney has said British Secretary of State James Brokenshire needs to wake up to the reality that the majority of people in the north voted to remain in the EU.

The Foyle MLA said: “James Brokenshire and the British Government are in denial over the outcome of the June referendum.

“There is no so-called ‘UnIted Kingdom’ position on leaving the EU.

“Scotland, Gibraltar and the North voted to remain and Brokenshire and his cabinet colleagues need to wake up to that reality.

“If democracy means anything to the Tories they have to stop pretending they can simply ignore the devolved institutions of the Good Friday Agreement and the majority here who voted to stay in the EU.

“The British government must come forward with proposals on how they will honour the democratic will of the people of the North.

“The Irish government must press home to Downing Street that they will do all within their power as an EU state to garner support among other EU states for the North to remain in the EU.

“Democracy demands no less,” he added.
