GOLDEN BOY…Derry’s Jason Smyth greeted in Dublin by his proud wife and child at homecoming in Dublin airport for Ireland’s Paralympians

IRELAND’S Paralympic athletes have arrived home to crowds of family and supporters at Dublin Airport after returning from Rio de Janeiro.

The 48-strong Paralympic team touched down soon after midday.

The team exceeded all expectations in Rio, Brazil, claiming 11 medals: four gold, four silver and three bronze.

Among those to receive a hero’s welcome back on Irish soil was Derry’s very own Usain Bolt of the Paralympics Jason Smyth.

He won another gold medal in the 100 metres sprint to add to his tally from Beijing and London with a time of 10.64 second.

Jason, from Eglinton, was greeted by his wife and young child at the aiport.

Wearing his Rio gold medal proudly around his neck, Jason said told waiting reporters: “t is great to be back.

“It has been a long few weeks and I am delighted to be home.

“This was my third Olympics and I am so grateful things have been going so well.

“And it is great to see the support we have here today,” he added.
