Raymond McCartney water chargesSINN Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has encouraged men over 50 to make sure they get checked for prostate cancer.

The Foyle MLA said: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men but still some men are reluctant to seek treatment if they are concerned.

“Men over 50 years old are most at risk from prostate cancer and it is this group who should make sure they speak to their doctor and get checked.

“In the North more than one thousand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.

“Sadly more than 250 men a year die in the North each year from prostate cancer.

“However, it can be treated successfully if diagnosed early so it is vitally important to talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

“I would encourage men to talk about prostate cancer and raise awareness of it,” he added.
