THE former Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Elisha McCallion has expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed over £16,000 towards her Mayoral Charity and for supporting the Alzheimer’s Society during her year in office.

Speaking at the formal cheque presentation earlier this week, Elisha said: “There is a lot of good will in this city.

“I met many people asking if there is anything I can to do to help especially people who are affected personally by dementia, they really want to get involved. I ask all of those who have expressed the desire to act and make a difference to those affected by dementia to get in touch with Alzheimer’s Society today.

“There is so much to be done.”

Maeveen Brown from the Alzheimer’s Society said “I wish to sincerely thank Mayor Elisha McCallion for the incredible work she carried out for Alzheimer’s Society during her year in office.

“She has, with the support of Karen Henderson and the team from the Mayor’s office, raised thousands of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society and raised our profile to no end in the Derry City and Strabane district council areas.

“All of this work has led to a greater understanding and a greater level of awareness regarding dementia.

“The public now realise that this is not just a natural part of aging, it’s a physical disease much like cancer and they are motivated to help us in the fight against it.

“If you would like to get involved then please do get in touch.  Let us know why Alzheimer’s Society is close to your heart and how you would like to raise some funds, whether its £1 or £1000, every little bit makes a very big difference.  Contact Rosario on Tel: 028 8225 0103 or visit our website www.alzheimers.org.uk
