Derry Sinn Fein LGBTSINN Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the move by the United Nations to appoint an independent expert to investigate discrimination against the LGBT community.

He said: “I welcome the resolution from the United Nations condemning discrimination and violence against the LGBT community.

“There can be no place in our society for discrimination and no one should have to face violence as a result of their sexuality.

“The UN has also agreed to appoint an independent expert to compile annual reports on the discrimination faced by the LGBT community around the the world.

“The European Union has been good for LGBT rights and it simply does not make sense to abandon that at the behest of the most right wing and reactionary wing of the British Tory party which is determined to demolish human rights and equality legislation.

“The people of the North of Ireland voted to remain in the EU and that should be respected.”
