Damian Barton’s tactics and team selection didn’t work against Tyrone

DERRY started brightly in the second half with a mountain to climb as they trailed 0-06 to Tryone’s 3-08.

Ryan Bell came close but watched his shot just going inches past the Tyrone post.

It could have been a vital goal and helped Derry’s momentum to chase down the 11 point gap

But within seconds of Bell’s missed goal, Tyrone charged up the field and McCurry pointed from open play to increase the Red Hands lead to 12 points.

Derry battled back scoring six points but amazingly Tyrone only scored six points the entire second half which did not please manager Mickey Harte who said after the game that his team “were not ruthless enough”.

Then things went downhill when on 53 minutes Derry’s McFaul seen red when he is handed a black card after an earlier yellow is greeted with barely a murmur at at Celtic Park

Derry were down to 14 players, an even bigger task for the Oak Leafers.

Then on 67 minutes Derry were reduced to 13 players as referee David Coldrick sends off Chrissy McKaigue after the Slaughtneil man appears to elbow Colm Cavanagh.

In the end, Tyrone ran out 3-14 winners to Derry’s disappointing 0-12.

So it is back to the drawing board for Derry’s Damian Barton after a poor performance by his players.
