CROSS-BORDER TRADE IN ILLEGAL PUPPY FARMS EXPOSED BY BBC PANORAMA INVESTIGATION

THE VILE and disgraceful existence of Ireland’s puppy farms is exposed on BBC Panorama tonight, Monday, May 16.

And the investigation reveals that the North of Ireland is used as the entry point for Irish traders to get puppies into the UK without proper checks.

Earlier today, Derry Daily reported the case of Sammy Bremner who bought a pup for £245 from a man in a Co Derry car park.

He claimed the man selling it said he was from Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

The BBC programme delved into the world of the dog trading and secretly filmed conditions inside puppy farms that breed dogs for the UK market.

The footage is disturbing with young dogs, desperate for attention and affection, living in drastically substandard, unhealthy and often dangerous conditions.

The programme coincides with the USPCA’s new campaign to stop the terrible trade in puppy mill dogs.

Sammy Bremner said: “’m so angry. I can honestly say I’d happily face jail time if I got my hands on the man who sold me that wee dog. It’s not about the money, it’s about the pain and distress the dog died in. It cried in agony before it passed away. We called her Tootsie and she never stood a chance.

“Now she is dead, my family are devastated, we’ve lost £245 and the man who fleeced us and sold us a sick and dying pup is long gone.

“I was foolish in how I approached the whole thing and now I’m paying the price. We have shed many tears over this.”

Sammy added: “All I can do is warn other people about what happened to me. So I have joined the USPCA’s campaign to bring this trade to an end.”

Panorama – Britain’s Puppy Dealers Exposed is broadcast on BBC One NI tonight at 11.35 pm.
