Maritime museum picTHE public are encouraged to have their say on proposals for a new Maritime Museum and Archive Centre planned for Ebrington.

They can take part in a public consultation event planned for St Columb’s Park House on Wednesday 11 May between 9am and 8pm.

The proposed project is a joint initiative between Derry City and Strabane District Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Tourism NI and OFMDFM and will include galleries, an archival and genealogy section and educational facilities.

Jenny O’Donnell, project officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council explained that that the public consultation event is a key part of the project plan and is being held prior to the submission of a planning application at the end of the month.

Encouraging the public to come along and participate in the consultation process, she said it will be a chance for people to see the proposed concept designs and give their views and opinions on what they want included in the museum.

“We are hugely excited about this project and really keen to get the public involved in. This is an important flagship scheme for the Ebrington site that will provide a much needed catalyst for the physical and economic regeneration of Ebrington, the city and region. It will be a ‘must see’ experiential museum and tourist attraction that will tell the story of Derry’s maritime history and its imperative that we have input from the wider public.

“The Museum will be a celebration of the city’s maritime heritage and be an important public resource that will help locals and visitors alike to understand, explore and appreciate the enormous influence the River Foyle and its wider connections have had on the region. It will bring to life the city’s rich maritime heritage and allow us to provide access to the city’s archive and genealogical collections. The public’s participation in the consultation process is essential part of our plan moving forward with this project,” she concluded.

A comment box will be available on the day or alternatively emailed directly to Council via[email protected] before Wednesday 11 May at 8pm.
